What is Interpersonal Psychotherapy?
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a time-limited, empirically tested treatment for affective and anxiety disorders and a variety of interpersonal problems. Based on attachment and communication theory, IPT is designed to assist patients to more effectively deal with problems such as interpersonal disputes, role transitions, and grief and loss. Effective communication and problem solving are emphasized, as is the need to increase or more effectively utilize social support. IPT has been empirically validated for use with both adults and adolescents.
What are the clinical applications of IPT?
IPT has been found to be useful with:
- Anorexia Nervosa and other eating disorders
- Perinatal Depression
- Adolescent Depression
- Bipolar Depression
- Substance Abuse
- Anxiety Disorders
Can psychotropic medication be used in conjunction with IPT?
While research indicates that IPT is at least as effective as psychotropic medication in relieving psychological symptoms, a combined medication/therapy regimen may be used. The use of medication may be particularly warranted for patients with chronic courses of mental disorders and/or lower levels of global functioning. It should be noted that many medications have psychological sequelae which may be relevant when assessing the patient's interpersonal functioning. For example, certain antidepressants, such as SSRI's, may produce sexual dysfunction, which may lead to difficulties in the marital or other intimate relationships.
What types of training opportunities and certification levels are available through the IPT institute?
The Interpersonal Psychotherapy Course is offered at 4 levels (A-D). Level A provides an introduction to the IPT model, and instruction in applying the IPT approach to patients with psychiatric disorders. Level B provides experiential training in the provision of IPT, supervised by a certified IPT Institute supervisor. Level C maintains an advanced level of IPT knowledge and experience, consistent with research-level clinical applications. Level D provides supervisory and training experience to IPT clinicians and researchers. We offer one- and two-day courses, and can design courses for longer on-site training, as well. |
