One Day and Two Day IPT Introductory Courses

Course Objectives

To provide an introduction to the IPT model, and instruction in applying the IPT approach to patients with psychiatric disorders. The one day course meets the requirement for Level A certification; the two day course meets the requirement for Level B certification in IPT.

Who is the course suitable for?

  • Experienced health professionals including psychiatrists, clinical and counseling psychologists, nurse therapists, social workers, occupational therapists, and general practitioners.
  • The course provides specific training in the IPT model which builds upon previously acquired basic therapeutic skills.
  • Applicants are assumed to have previous training and experience in conducting psychotherapy generally.

INTERPERSONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY ONE-DAY COURSE (Sample)

Educational Objectives:
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of interpersonal theory and IPT research literature.
  2. Conduct Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and utilize IPT techniques.

Course Description and Format:
This course is designed to instruct participants in the theory and practice of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).   It will consist of didactic presentations and a review of the research evidence supporting IPT, followed by a multimedia presentation of IPT with depressed patients.   Interspersed in this section of the presentation will be videotapes of the course director and other experts conducting IPT with depressed individuals.   Group discussion will help participants synthesize the information and examples presented.  

The class is designed for psychotherapists with some experience in dynamic psychotherapy, and presumes that participants are well acquainted with basic psychotherapy principles, such as the ability to effectively engage patients, to formulate cases, and to use specific psychotherapy techniques.

  2. Conduct Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) and utilize IPT techniques.
  3. Deal effectively with difficult and resistant psychotherapy patients using IPT techniques

Course Description and Format:
This course is designed to instruct participants in the theory and practice of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).   The course will consist of didactic presentations and a review of the research evidence supporting IPT, followed by a multimedia presentation describing the use of IPT with patients.   Interspersed in this section of the presentation will be videotapes of the course director and other experts conducting IPT with depressed individuals.   Group discussion, role-playing, and review of participant videotapes will help to synthesize the information and examples presented.     

The class is designed for psychotherapists with some experience in dynamic psychotherapy, and presumes that participants are well acquainted with basic psychotherapy principles, such as the ability to effectively engage patients, to formulate cases, and to use specific psychotherapy techniques.   It will be of particular benefit to those practitioners who envision using a great deal of short-term psychotherapy, or who frequently use psychotherapy as an adjunct to medication management.
