Birth

When you are close to delivering your baby, your nurse will prepare you for the birth. She will make you as comfortable as possible on the birthing bed/delivery table and help support you during the pushing stage of labor.

If you have an epidural catheter, the anesthesiologist may inject more pain medication for the birth. If not, your obstetrician may give you a local or pudendal anesthesia or both if needed.

Local anesthesia numbs the perineal area so that if an episiotomy is necessary, you will not feel it being cut or repaired. Pudendal anesthesia helps numb the nerves in the pelvic area for a short time while birth is taking place. This will help ease some of the discomfort of delivery. If you or your baby have any problems during your pregnancy or during your labor, a pediatric health care team will be present for your baby's birth.

Partner's Notes for Birth

  • Help your partner into a pushing position and support her body as she pushes. The nurse will suggest several positions for you to try. She will remain with you and your partner during the pushing stage to assist you both during this time.
  • Remind your partner to rest and relax between pushes.
  • Continue to offer her ice chips, sips of water and a cool, damp cloth as needed.
  • Let your partner know when you start seeing the baby's head. This will reassure her that she is making progress. Ask your partner if she would like a mirror at the end of the bed while she pushes. The nurse will be happy to get you one.
  • Be as calm and reassuring as possible.
