Glucose Tolerance Test

The glucose tolerance test (GTT) is a three-hour blood test to determine whether or not you have diabetes.

Who needs this test?

Approximately 2-3 percent of all pregnant women will develop gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy). If diabetes is not diagnosed and treated properly it can be harmful to mother, baby or both.

What must I do to prepare for the test?

  • It is very important that you eat your regular diet the three days before the test.
  • In addition to your regular diet, eat an extra candy bar and drink an extra can of regular pop each of these three days.
  • Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum after midnight the night before the test. You may have sips of water.

What will happen during the test?

  • A nurse will obtain one small tube of blood. You will be given a sweet beverage to drink over a five minute period.
  • A small amount of blood will be obtained before drinking the beverage and one hour, two hours and three hours after you have finished the beverage.
  • You may have sips of water during this time.
  • Do not eat, smoke or chew gum until the test has been completed.
  • You should remain in the hospital while the test is being done.

What if the test indicates diabetes?

You will need to speak with your doctor, a dietitian, and nurse. Future plans for your care will be discussed at that time.
