Travel in Pregnancy

Always consult your doctor or midwife before traveling a long distance, especially when visiting foreign countries.  Vaccinations may be necessary to travel to some foreign places.  These vaccinations may or may not be appropriate to take when you are pregnant.

Travel may not be recommended if you or the baby have any high risk problems.

If you are traveling by train or plane, ask about their policies for pregnant women.  You may need a doctor’s or midwife’s written approval when traveling in late pregnancy.

  • Always carry a copy of your prenatal records in case you need medical attention while traveling.
  • Always wear your seat belt properly.  You may wish to bring along a few pillows to support your back and neck.  You may wish to position your seat to stretch your legs.
  • Walk often to help circulation in your legs.  If you have leg cramps or varicose veins, you may wear support stockings.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and eat healthy snacks.
  • Go to the bathroom frequently to prevent urinary tract infections and constipation.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that is not tight around your abdomen and legs.
