Thoracic Surgery Residency Program

Mission

The primary goal of the UI Hospitals and Clinics Thoracic Surgery Residency Program is to prepare each resident to be successful in the career path he/she chooses--whether academic, specialty, rural, or private practice.

Graduates of this program are competent to enter private practice or to continue on in an academic career. See Alumni Placement  for details of the destinations of previous Iowa surgical residents. Thoracic surgery residency training is a high priority item for the full time faculty of the UI Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Through close supervision, the surgical staff provides teaching at each level for the residents with a well-organized program and continually increased responsibility.

An additional goal of the program is to present opportunities for residents to write papers, chapters, do book reviews, etc. See Current Residents   or each resident's recent publications as well as information on research they have done.
