Dermatology Residency

Facilities and Experiences

The Department is located in modern outpatient clinical quarters consisting of 16 examining rooms, five surgical suites, a laser surgical suite and a phototherapy suite. Departmental offices, including offices for residents and fellows, and spacious teaching, laboratory, conference and library facilities are contiguous with the departmental out-patient clinic area. A modern dermatologic library, including audiovisual and computer-assisted materials, is integral to the department area. The full service Hardin Library for the Health Sciences (340,000 bound volumes and 2,500 serials and journals) is immediately across the street. The dermatology in-patient service resides in the R. J. Carver Pavilion, a 2 minute indoor walk from the departmental clinic. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has 845 beds and provides services to over 530,000 ambulatory patient clinic visits annually. Departmental research laboratories occupy 3,000 square feet in the medical laboratory facilities that are also close by.

Approximately 25,000 patient visits are made to the department clinic annually. All patients are available for student, resident and fellow teaching. Residents are encouraged and expected to carry a major responsibility for patient care under faculty supervision. The dermatology outpatient clinic at the 327 bed Veterans Administration Medical Center of Iowa City provides additional resident training experience. The diversity of case material is enriched significantly by the referral patterns (extramural and intramural) to this tertiary health care center from the large geographic area of Iowa and western Illinois. Residents see additional rare cases through regular attendance at regional and national dermatologic meetings.

It is expected that each resident will acquire sufficient knowledge and skill over the three year program to become a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology, Inc.
