At A Glance: ETC Renovation

Current facility 

  • 21,000-square feet, built in 1978
  • Built to accommodate 20,000 patient visits per year
  • 7,000 additional square feet of office/support space is located elsewhere within UI Hospitals and Clinics, but will be incorporated in the new facility

Future facility

  • 60,000 square feet, scheduled completion in 2009
  • Built to accommodate 45,000 patient visits per year

Timeline

  • Multiple construction phases, beginning in February 2005
  • Initial phases: adding temporary patient parking, relocating utilities, constructing larger, permanent parking area
  • Later phases: building the new clinical area, slated for completion in early 2007
  • Final phases: staff moves into new ETC area while construction workers will renovate the existing facility
  • Completion of the project is scheduled for 2009.

  • Multiple private triage and registration areas promote efficient, confidential interaction with patients entering and leaving the Emergency Treatment Center

Technology

For the protection of patients and staff, the new facility incorporates:

  • Tracking devices
  • Entrance and exit controls
  • Sophisticated security cameras

Modern Design Features

  • 28 spacious, private patient rooms
  • Three major critical care rooms
  • Three specialized trauma rooms, each able to accommodate two stretchers
  • Two rooms for psychiatric emergencies
  • One specialty room for ophthalmologic and dental emergencies
  • Special accommodations for evaluations of sexual assault victims, management of bariatric patients, and observation of patients with chest pain
  • Designated areas for pediatric and urgent care
  • Expanded nursing station (four times larger than current area) provides an unencumbered area for staff and specialty service consultations
  • Visible and accessible room layouts, strategic equipment placement, and user-friendly work areas
  • Hallway width will increase from 8-feet to 10-feet wide
  • Private corridor to shield trauma arrivals from public

  • UI Hospitals and Clinics Emergency Medicine residency program
  • Trauma and emergency medicine administration
  • Teaching areas, including an auditorium
  • Designated space for laboratory and radiology services
