Level I Trauma Center

Trauma in Emergency room

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been certified as a Level I Trauma Center for adult and pediatric patients-- the highest level of trauma center designation the American College of Surgeons offers.

The Level I Trauma Center has also been verified as a Resource Trauma Care Facility by the Iowa Department of Public Health. This represents the highest level of designation within the statewide trauma care delivery system.

Level I designation means that UI Hospitals and Clinics has demonstrated that it is has trained and capable personnel available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for diagnosing and treating the most critically injured patients. It also means our trauma center has the facilities and equipment necessary to provide specialized care and our staff are actively involved in ongoing self-assessment of care and our system.

The trauma team, administered by the Department of Surgery, includes six trauma surgeons, four of whom are also critical-care specialists. In addition, multiply injured patients receive care from specialists in many areas including but not limited to orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngalogy, opthalmalogy, anesthesia, radiology and the Emergency Treatment Center.
