Our departmental mission statement includes achieving excellence in research as a way to improve patient care and satisfaction. A key component of achieving research excellence is a robust and innovative research-training program.
In addition to our residency research-training program, we offer pre-medical and medical students the opportunity to gain research training and experience with our Faculty and Research Scientists in areas of interest to emergency medicine. A number of research projects are available to provide students with training opportunities. Informal arrangements are made for medical students to do research during their second, third, or fourth years. In addition, first year medical students are encouraged to explore our formal medical student summer research program.
Applying for the EM Medical Student Summer Research Program
- Pre- M1 and M1 students are encouraged to find a mentor whose research projects are of interest.
- Students should contact their potential mentor as early as possible (January-February) prior to the summer session.
- With the help of their mentors, students will prepare a proposal for the College of Medicine (COM) Medical Student Research Program fellowship.
- Students who do not receive a COM fellowship can informally apply for departmental support; however, these funds may be limited.
Summer Program Goals and Objectives

Our medical students are an integral part of the department. The summer research program will provide not only training in scientific and presentation skills, but also mentoring in professional development. This support and mentoring will “jump start” our trainees’ future careers in academic emergency medicine research.
