Our departmental mission statement includes achieving excellence in research as a way to improve patient care and satisfaction. A key component of achieving research excellence is a robust and innovative research-training program.
Since its inception in 2004, the University of Iowa emergency medicine residency program has provided its trainees with rigorous clinical education and experience. In addition, just as there is a growing demand for a career in emergency medicine, so too is there a growing demand for research training in the discipline; training that will provide interested physician-scientists with the background and experience to excel in academic careers.
Our current program provides both a didactic and a hands-on research experience. In addition, we are in the process of expanding the training and research opportunities for those whose career goals include research. The expanded curriculum will include basic training in formulating, testing, and evaluating a hypothesis, as well as training and mentoring in professional development skills. Hands-on research opportunities will involve integrating residents into Faculty and Research Scientists research projects, and plugging them into the greater research community.
To meet the needs of residents interested in increasing their understanding and awareness of research in emergency medicine, we will be offering the clinical residency track. For those interested in a career in academic emergency medicine research, we will offer the residency research track.
Together, our residents and medical students trained in academic emergency medicine research represent the bright and expanding future of research in our discipline. |
