Emergency Medicine Residency

Greetings from the Director

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program at the University of Iowa.

Residency training represents three of the most important years in your medical education. The knowledge and skills you obtain during this time will affect the manner in which you deliver patient care for the rest of your career. Hence, it is critical that you match at a residency that is appropriate for you. As you evaluate the many training programs available, you must determine if the residency's philosophy and values are compatible with your training goals.

Our fundamental philosophy is to provide residents with a rock solid clinical experience, a broad based exposure to academic emergency medicine and the flexibility necessary to pursue specific areas of interest including teaching, research, administrations and clinical subspecialty training.

To accomplish this, we have assembled a diverse group of clinical educators that have trained at some of the country's most prominent Emergency Medicine programs. Our faculty members have a broad range of expertise including research, forensic medicine, ultrasonography, international medicine, flight and ground based EMS transport systems, toxicology, hyperbaric medicine, and pediatric emergency medicine. This wide range of interests will assure that individual resident interests can be fostered and supported.

It is our hope that the information provided here will help you determine if the University of Iowa is the best fit for you. If you think it might be, please visit our Iowa City campus and see what happens when education is your number one priority.

Hans House, MD, FACED
Associate Chair for Education
