Emergency Medicine Residency

Residency Hospitals

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

Each year, the Emergency Treatment Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics treats more than 42,000 patients from across Iowa and surrounding states. Located in Iowa City, Iowa, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been certified as a Level I Trauma Center with Pediatric Commitment - the highest level of trauma center designation the American College of Surgeons offers. In addition, UI Hospitals and Clinics has been verified by the Iowa Department of Public Health as a 'Resource Trauma Care Facility' reflecting the state's most comprehensive level of trauma care.

St Luke's Medical Center

Located near downtown Cedar Rapids, less than 30 minutes from The University of Iowa campus, St. Luke's Medical Center Emergency Department treats nearly 60,000 patients each year. Approximately 25 percent of those patients are children, recognizing St. Luke's role as a primary pediatric center for Cedar Rapids. Equipped with advanced trauma equipment and staffed by a dedicated, experienced team of physicians, nurses, and technicians, St. Luke's Emergency Department has 12,986 square feet devoted to patient care with 24 patient beds. In addition, the Emergency Department features a chest pain observation unit.

St. Luke's has Cedar Rapids' only cardiovascular surgery service, so it sees a majority of the most severe cardiac cases. The hospital features specialty inpatient services in geriatrics and psychiatry, and the majority of these patients enter through the Emergency Department. The staff is comprised of excellent teachers who are enthusiastic and very supportive of resident education. For years, rotations at St. Luke's have been the most requested/most popular off-site rotation for University of Iowa residents.
