The Iowa Emergency Medicine Residency is the only emergency medicine residency in the entire State of Iowa. As a unique program, we seek enthusiastic residents with a pioneering spirit to be a part of something very special as we grow and learn from each other. The Emergency Medicine Residency program was developed because of a heightened student interest in emergency medicine as a career. The initiative also stems from a statewide interest to increase Iowa's residency-trained, board-certified emergency medicine specialists.
The residency program is a progressive educational experience with increasing patient responsibilities over the three years of training as residents develop clinical skills and demonstrate medical judgment and competence. The training program consists of formal training and clinical experiences on assigned rotations, patient care in the Emergency Treatment Center, and structured conferences.
From it’s inception in 2004, the residency program has been responsive, adapting the clinical and didactic experience to fit the needs of residents. The program is now firmly established as one of the premier emergency medicine training sites in the Midwest. We are looking for residents who will continue to push themselves and the program toward academic excellence.
The faculty includes not only committed educators, but also seasoned clinicians and successful researchers.

Program Goals
Our fundamental philosophy is to provide residents with:
- a rock solid clinical experience in emergency medicine
- a broad exposure to all facets of academic emergency medicine
- the flexibility necessary to pursue specific areas of interest including teaching, research, administration and clinical subspecialty training, and
- a broad experience in a rural health care setting and the clinical tools necessary to function with a minimum of back-up support.
