Emergency Medicine Residency

Research Opportunities

The University of Iowa is one of the top medical research institutions in the nation, including a National Institute of Health-funded emergency medicine research laboratory and a dedicated emergency medicine research director. Residents interested in pursuing a career in research will be encouraged to become involved with ongoing investigations in the fields of myocardial ischemia, brain injury, liquid ventilation, and pain management. It is a fundamental goal of our research program to assist interested residents in presenting at national meetings and publishing in emergency medicine journals. Our research staff has tremendous experience and hold editorial posts on prominent emergency medicine journals including Academic Emergency Medicine and the Journal of Emergency Medicine.

A fully equipped basic science lab with support staff is one of the characteristics that sets the University of Iowa Department of Emergency Medicine apart. Animal labs are available to those who would like to use animal models in basic and pre-clinical research.

The University of Iowa also houses an injury prevention center including a state-of-the-art driving simulator funded by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration. A research partnership between the Department of Emergency Medicine and the School of Public Health offers epidemiological studies, including studies of rural EMS systems.

The Department of Emergency Medicine also has a strong program of clinical research with opportunities to design and execute clinical drug studies, patient outcome studies, prospective studies of patient attitudes and beliefs, studies of educational methods, etc. There is assistance available in study methodology both within the department and during joint research conferences held with other departments. Statistical support is also available.
