Welcome

The Department of Family Medicine is recognized nationally for excellence in patient care, teaching and research. The department is dedicated to providing primary care for the citizens of Iowa, educating medical students, training resident physicians, providing continuing education, and creating new knowledge to improve primary care and health care delivery systems.

Patients

Our goal is to protect your health and that of your family. In addition to providing excellent primary care, UI Family Care health professionals offer expertise in the full range of a family's health care, including:

  • Pregnancy-related health care including delivery and care of mother and child after delivery
  • Care for children and adolescents including sports physicals and immunizations
  • Women's health care and birth control options for women and men
  • Care for adults and older patients, including geriatrics and nursing home care
  • Behavioral health care through our Counseling and Health Promotions Service

Education

The department is committed to educating medical students in principles of primary care and the specialty of family medicine. Our residencies train physicians to provide continuing and comprehensive care to the total family unit, using a concept that integrates the patient, health professionals, and the physician into an efficient and effective health care team. The Faculty Development Fellowship develops and trains family physicians early in their careers to fill positions of academic medicine leadership. The Geriatric Fellowship trains board-certified family physicians and internists in the care of elderly patients. Continuing education is available to our family physician colleagues in the community and Iowa through weekly conferences and the annual Refresher Course for Family Physicians.

Research

Family Medicine faculty are among the nation's best-trained family physicians and widely recognized for their contributions to family medicine research and literature. Barry Carter, Pharm.D heads the department's research mission, and works closely with the family medicine faculty and external colleagues on collaborative research to improve primary care and health delivery systems.
These are exciting times for the discipline of family medicine and the Department of Family Medicine. Take a tour of our website and let us tell you more about us.
