Community

Nestled among eastern Iowa's rolling hills along the banks of the Iowa River, the communities of Iowa City and Coralville offer the best features of big city living without the big city traffic and crowds. Iowa City, Coralville and rural communities of Johnson County have a total population of 100,000 citizens.

Cultural Highlights -- The Iowa City and Coralville communities offer museums, galleries, theater performances and concerts, coffee houses, street vendors, and delicious cuisine from every corner of the globe. Much of the cosmopolitan flair can be attributed to The University of Iowa which is home to the Iowa Center for the Arts, Hancher Auditorium (which hosts Broadway productions, concerts and dance performances), Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History, Writers Workshop and the International Writers Workshop. A member of the Big Ten Conference, the university hosts both men's and women's collegiate sporting events. Citizens also participate in community activities and events including the Iowa City Community Theatre, Riverside Theatre, Iowa City Area Science Center, Iowa Children's Museum and art festivals.

Outdoor Highlights -- Iowa City and Coralville communities offer dozens of beautiful neighborhood parks, bike paths and unequaled recreation programs for residents and visitors. Lake Macbride State Park, located 15 miles north of Iowa City, offers 2,180 acres of woodlands and native prairie for hiking, camping, fishing and sailing. Coralville Reservoir and Devonian Fossil Gorge, located six minutes north of Iowa City, offers camping, fishing and boating facilities. The Devonian Fossil Gorge was created in 1993 when floodwaters exposed a large bed of marine fossils more than 375 million years old. Nearby Palisades Kepler State Park offers hiking and mountain bike trails and grand views of the rocky bluffs along the banks of the Cedar River.

Educational Highlights -- The University of Iowa's enrollment is over 27,000 students with 3,900 full-time and visiting faculty from around the world. Fifty percent of Iowa City residents have at least a four-year college degree. The public school system of Iowa City, Coralville and the surrounding area enjoys a 97 percent graduation rate, and area high schools boast some of the nation's highest percentages of National Merit Scholars

Employment Opportunities -- Professional, technical and manufacturing opportunities are offered by The University of Iowa, University of Iowa Health Care, Iowa City Community Schools, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Hy-Vee supermarkets, ACT, Rockwell International, Pearson NCS.
