We will prepare skilled and confident physicians for the discipline of Family Medicine who excel as leaders in their communities and in their professions.
We will provide a diverse faculty who will mentor residents in a supportive environment as they acquire the expertise necessary to fulfill their professional and personal goals.
Welcome to the Family Medicine Residency!
Our program is sponsored by University of Iowa Health Care. The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics work together as partners in UI Health Care to provide quality health care and educational programs. The Department of Family Medicine offers unequaled opportunities for our resident physicians to excel.
Since 1990 U.S. News and World Report has annually ranked University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics among "America's Best Hospitals." The April 2011 issue of U.S. News and World Report ranks the UI Carver College of Medicine among all public and private graduate programs for medical education. Ranked programs include primary care (10th), rural medicine (15th), family medicine (19th) and research (25th).
Three hundred sixteen UI Health Care physicians are also listed on the current "Best Doctors in America" database, including 15 faculty from the Department of Family Medicine: Drs. Alison Abreu, David Bedell, George Bergus, Richard Dobyns, John Ely, Jill Endres, Mark Graber, Paul James, Gerald Jogerst, Barcey Levy, Britt Marcussen, Victoria Sharp, Kelly Skelly, Michelle Weckmann and Jason Wilbur.
With the resources available at a major university, our department has developed an innovative selection of residency programs to prepare you for a career in family medicine or family medicine-psychiatry. We adapt to the changing medical environment, preparing our residents for the medicine of tomorrow, not just today. Current programs reflect the state of the art in medical education.
We partner with colleagues at University of Iowa Health Care, in rural Iowa, and at international medical centers to offer unique training opportunities.
We are proud of these achievements, and prouder still of the qualities that have earned this recognition: a skilled and compassionate professional staff, an outstanding reputation for research, and a commitment to evolve and improve.
