A native of Pella, Iowa, I was fortunate to earn an undergraduate degree from Luther College, Decorah, IA in biology and a master’s degree in history and theology from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA. From there I journeyed to Iowa and completed a dual degree in MD/MPH. My medical school activities included Christian Medical Association and volunteer work with Hospice of Iowa City with the 11th hour volunteer program, respite and new volunteer training. During this time I was also given the opportunity to study theology, medicine, and philosophy over Lutheran barley sodas in Germany for an entire year! In addition to spending time with wife Jan and daughter Tessera, my hobbies and interests include fishing, ultimate frisbee, reading, landscaping, home improvement and participating in the community.
