Family Medicine Careers and Residency Information

Students considering a career in family medicine would benefit from extra-curricular participation in the activities of the UI FMIG , MECO and/or Department of Family Medicine Summer Research. Important benefits include contact with UI Family Medicine faculty and practicing family physicians and an opportunity to interact with other students interested in careers in family medicine. Several Family Medicine clerkships are available to further explore your career options.

The American Academy of Family Physicians has an excellent website. The following "pages" on that site are recommended:

• http://www.aafp.org/residencies/ - the on-line directory of all US FP residency programs. Most have direct links to program directors and/or coordinators' e-mail and most link to the residency program's website, so this is a great way to do initial exploration of programs.
• http://fmignet.aafp.org/ - The Family Medicine Interest group's website - lots of stuff for students here about careers and residencies.
• http://www.aafp.org/x20259.xml - The AAFP's "Strolling Through the Match" - a great resource - all students should use this to help them with the Match process!

The American Association of Medical Colleges has information about careers, the Match, and the ERAS system, all of it excellent:

• http://www.aamc.org/students/cim/start.htm - Careers in Medicine (formerly MedCAREERS) is a 4-year program for medical students with activities and information for each of the years. Developed by physicians and career development experts, it is a great resource.

• http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm - ERAS is the official system for residency applications nation-wide and include most specialties.
