General Information About Neurology ClinicsWelcome to the Neurology Clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Our physicians and other professional staff provide diagnosis and treatment to patients 17 years of age and older who have disorders affecting the nervous system. Patients receive care in the neurology outpatient clinic, as well as in one of many subspecialty clinics tailored to their needs. These include: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, botulinum toxin treatment, epilepsy, headaches, the Huntington Disease Center of Excellence, memory disorders, movement disorders, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, sleep disorders, and stroke. The group is assisted by professional and scientific experts in electrophysiology, neuropsychology, and cognitive rehabilitation. The University of Iowa College of Medicine commitment to neurological care began in 1904 when Dr. Clarence Van Epps, founder of the UI Department of Neurology, joined the medical staff. Dr. Van Epps and his successors, Drs. Adolph Sahs, M.W. Van Allen, and Antonio Damasio were instrumental in making the Department of Neurology one of the most highly respected in the country. Today, the Department of Neurology is internationally recognized for its research, while remaining committed to its original clinical and teaching missions and retaining the flexibility and strength required to adapt to today's health care environment. The department brings together over 40 experienced neurologists and over 20 neurologists in training. The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Department of Neurology is pleased to provide you with the most advanced and highest quality neurological care.
Arrival
Clinic Reception The receptionist will also request information concerning your local doctor. This information is important because the neurology physician will send a report to your referring doctor informing him or her of the results of your visit. Your referring physician may also need to be notified of any test results indicating a change in medication or treatment provided to you locally.
Health Care Team Your examination will be directed by a staff physician. The staff physician in charge of your care may be assisted by residents (physicians receiving specialty training), and medical students. The physicians will conduct a medical history, physical and neurological exam. They will then discuss with you the need for any further medical testing or consultations with other physicians in the hospital.
Tests Some tests may be arranged the same day. However, if another day is required, the receptionist will make every effort to meet your needs. If you have any questions about your tests, please ask to speak with a nurse or physician.
Prescriptions For your convenience, we encourage you to obtain renewals of your prescriptions from your local physician.
