General Information About Neurology Clinics

Welcome to the Neurology Clinic at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Our physicians and other professional staff provide diagnosis and treatment to patients 17 years of age and older who have disorders affecting the nervous system. Patients receive care in the neurology outpatient clinic, as well as in one of many subspecialty clinics tailored to their needs. These include: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, botulinum toxin treatment, epilepsy, headaches, the Huntington Disease Center of Excellence, memory disorders, movement disorders, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, sleep disorders, and stroke. The group is assisted by professional and scientific experts in electrophysiology, neuropsychology, and cognitive rehabilitation.

The University of Iowa College of Medicine commitment to neurological care began in 1904 when Dr. Clarence Van Epps, founder of the UI Department of Neurology, joined the medical staff. Dr. Van Epps and his successors, Drs. Adolph Sahs, M.W. Van Allen, and Antonio Damasio were instrumental in making the Department of Neurology one of the most highly respected in the country.

Today, the Department of Neurology is internationally recognized for its research, while remaining committed to its original clinical and teaching missions and retaining the flexibility and strength required to adapt to today's health care environment. The department brings together over 40 experienced neurologists and over 20 neurologists in training.

The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Department of Neurology is pleased to provide you with the most advanced and highest quality neurological care.

Arrival
When you arrive at the hospital, please stop at the Registration desk in the main lobby, then proceed to the Neurology Clinic. You may reach the clinic by taking elevator D to the second floor. The clinic entrance will be directly opposite the elevator.

Clinic Reception
Upon your arrival in the Neurology Clinic the receptionist who greets you will verify your appointment time. The receptionist will also verify your address and other pertinent information needed to communicate with you or to schedule future appointments.

The receptionist will also request information concerning your local doctor. This information is important because the neurology physician will send a report to your referring doctor informing him or her of the results of your visit. Your referring physician may also need to be notified of any test results indicating a change in medication or treatment provided to you locally.

Health Care Team
After you have checked in with the receptionist, you will be called to an exam room by a nurse. The nurse will take your vital signs, ask you about any allergies or medications, and inform you of your day's schedule.

Your examination will be directed by a staff physician. The staff physician in charge of your care may be assisted by residents (physicians receiving specialty training), and medical students. The physicians will conduct a medical history, physical and neurological exam. They will then discuss with you the need for any further medical testing or consultations with other physicians in the hospital.

Tests
During your clinic visit, your neurology physician may feel you would benefit from laboratory, radiology, electrophysiology, or other testing procedures. These tests will be scheduled at the end of your visit by the clinic receptionist.

Some tests may be arranged the same day. However, if another day is required, the receptionist will make every effort to meet your needs. If you have any questions about your tests, please ask to speak with a nurse or physician.

Prescriptions
Prescriptions may be filled at your local pharmacy or at the hospital pharmacy on the first floor. The hospital pharmacy will give you a thirty-day supply and return your prescription to you if refills are indicated. These refills may be obtained at your local pharmacy.

For your convenience, we encourage you to obtain renewals of your prescriptions from your local physician.

Hospitality Center
The Neurology Clinic is pleased to invite you to use the Hospitality Center in the clinic waiting room. The center offers hot beverages and is a courtesy extended to patients and their families or attendants who accompany them to the clinic.

Appointments
The Neurology Clinic is open for appointments Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except holidays.

Your community physician may schedule appointments by calling the Neurology Clinic Scheduling Center at 319-356-2571, or if this number is busy, call 319-356-8758. If this is your first visit to the UI Hospitals and Clinics Neurology Clinic, it is important that you make arrangements to bring x-rays and copies of your medical reports from your referring physician.

Return Appointments
If a return or follow-up appointment is indicated, the neurology physician will make the proper arrangements in the Scheduling Center.

Approximately one month prior to your scheduled return appointment, you will receive a reminder notice. If you wish to cancel or reschedule this appointment, please contact the Scheduling Center at 319-356-2571 or send a letter requesting the change to: Scheduling Center, Department of Neurology, The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, 200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, Iowa 52242.
