Neuromuscular Clinic

The neuromuscular diseases clinic is held four or five days per week, providing comprehensive evaluation and care for patients with peripheral nervous system disorders.

Residents assist in evaluating patients with motor neuron diseases, nerve root and plexus disorders, peripheral neuropathies, neuromuscular transmission disorders and primary muscle diseases. Residents also assist with nerve conduction and EMG studies performed in the Electromyography Laboratory, and may also assist with muscle biopsies. A neuromuscular-EMG conference is held twice a week. Histopathy review sessions occur monthly, and annual CME conferences on electrophysiology and neuromuscular disorders are presented.

Through didactic seminars and care of individual patients, residents learn about the application of molecular genetics in the field of neuromuscular disorders. Residents gain experience in treatment of neuromuscular disorders with immunosuppressive drugs, plasmaphoresis, intravenous immunoglobulin, and supportive care with physical, speech and occupational/orthotic therapies. Research opportunities abound and resident participation is encouraged. The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has designated this service as an Adult MDA Clinic and regularly assists patients and their families in obtaining care.
