Postdoctoral Residency in Clinical Neuropsychology

Program Overview

  1. The program is centered in the Benton Laboratory, in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). The UIHC is one of the largest university hospitals in the United States. The Benton Laboratory serves 2000+ patients per year, primarily with diagnostic and rehabilitation services.
  2. Assessment is the core of the residency. Residents often see three or more patients per day for assessment. The Benton Laboratory uses a brief core battery, with subsequent assessment instruments guided by the referral question, the condition of the patient, findings from the brief core battery, and other factors (see Benton, 1994; Tranel, 1996; Jones, 1996). Reports are concise, often less than a page for internal referrals and two to three pages for outside referrals.
  3. Referrals are generally made from the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, and Family Practice. Given the referral sources, the sheer number of cases, and the catchment area of UIHC, it is not uncommon to see very rare neuropsychological syndromes such as pure alexia, prosopagnosia, and crossed aphasia, as well as medical conditions ranging from the unsual (e.g., Moya-Moya, Charles Bonnet Syndrome) to the more common (Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury).
