Recent Advances

The University of Iowa Department of Neurology and Neurology Residency Program are experiencing an exciting period of growth and development, including:

  • An ongoing 5-year plan to recruit 17 additional clinician and clinician-scientist faculty members.
  • Appointment of 4 new faculty members as of July 1, 2011
    • Michael Froehler, MD, PhD (Stroke and Interventional Neuroradiology)
    • Matthew Gillum, PhD (Neuroscience)
    • Kevin Im, MD (Sleep Medicine)
    • Decontee (“Dee”) Jimmeh, MD (Neuromuscular and General Neurology)
  • Institution in the 2011-12 academic year of the Clinical Neuroscientist Training Program (CNS-TP), designed to promote the career development of residents interested in an academic career in the clinical neurosciences.  Jeff Boyle, MD, PhD (current PG-3 resident) has matriculated as the first trainee in the CNS-TP program.
  • Creation of a new Epilepsy inpatient service, providing the PG-3 residents a new training experience in clinical epilepsy care and electrophysiology, including surgical epilepsy management.  The service is staffed by epilepsy-specialist faculty physicians.
  • Consolidation of the general neurology and consultation inpatient services to produce a larger, more integrated team of staff and residents.
  • Transitioning in the PG-2 year from traditional call to a night float system.  Float will be conducted in a rotational fashion, with strong connections to the supervision and teaching of the consultation service.
  • Development of a robotic system of remote stroke telemedicine, allowing us to use cutting-edge technology to deliver high-level and timely patient care to a larger population.
  • Selection of a cohort of COC attendings (three assigned to each day’s COC clinic) based on their demonstrated excellence in patient care and teaching, to provide a more uniform and efficient learning experience for the residents.  Faculty are reappointed to this position on an annual basis by the chairman based on merit.
  • Designation of an overnight “Emergency Department/Consult” attending, who provides supervision to the junior and senior residents on night duty.  The residents may call the attending at any time, and conditions under which they must call (e.g. patient to be discharged from the ED) are well defined.
  • Full 5-year reaccreditation at our most recent ACGME review (March 2009).
