Subspecialty Services
Movement Disorders Clinic
Clinics for the diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease and other movement disorders are scheduled several times each week, including a special clinic devoted to the application of Botulinum toxin, the application of deep-brain stimulation, and a Huntington's Disease Center of Excellence clinic. Residents regularly participate in these clinics. There are four movement disorders faculty. A great number of investigational agents for the treatment of movement disorders are evaluated by the faculty.
Epilepsy Service
Epilepsy clinics for the management of patients with difficult-to-control seizures are scheduled regularly. Therapies such as vagal nerve stimulation and investigational drugs are considered as well as the need for inpatient video-EEG monitoring in patients with difficult diagnostic and management problems and for patients who are being considered for surgical treatment of epilepsy.
Stroke Center
The stroke unit consists of a cluster of fully monitored beds to which patients with acute cerebrovascular disorders are admitted. The faculty of the Cerebrovascular Diseases Division are active in utilizing and evaluating investigational therapies for stroke. There is close collaboration with Interventional Radiology, which utilizes state-of-the-art rescue therapies for stroke. The stroke center provides continued management of patients who have been discharged from the stroke center.
Headache Clinic
This clinic is staffed by a faculty member exclusively devoted to the treatment of headache. Both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies are utilized and botulinum toxin treatment is used when appropriate.
Sleep Disorders Center
The sleep disorders clinic is staffed daily, serving patients with excessive daytime sleepiness, severe chronic insomnia, parasomnia, and disorders of the sleep-wake cycle. Sleep monitoring is available in the 8-bed sleep-monitoring unit, in our fully accredited Sleep Disorders Center.
Neuromuscular Clinic
The neuromuscular diseases clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and care for patients with disorders of muscle or the peripheral nervous system.
The resident may also elect to participate in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis clinic, staffed by our neuromuscular faculty.
Residents also assist with nerve conduction and EMG studies performed in the Electromyography Laboratory, and may also assist with muscle biopsies. Nerve pathology review sessions occur regularly.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) has designated this service as an Adult MDA Clinic and regularly assists patients and their families in obtaining care.
Dementia Clinic
The memory disorders clinic provides evaluation, diagnosis, and continuing care of patients with mental decline caused by neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Pick's disease, and dementia due to stroke, tumor, or head injury. The clinic offers standard laboratory tests, neuroimaging studies, neuropsychological assessments, and speech pathology services, as well as psychiatric and medical consultations.
Neuro-ophthalmology
Patients are seen in Neuro-ophthalmology clinic five days per week. Our Neuro-ophthalmology faculty have primary appointments in Neurology or Ophthalmology and work together as a single team. A daily conference to discuss cases from the previous day is held. A broad range of neuro-ophthalmology cases is seen. Special interests among the faculty include clinical disorders of the pupil, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, optic neuritis, and new methods of sensory visual testing. Experimental work on the development of objective perimetry including pupil perimetry and the multifocal visual evoked response is being carried out; motion perimetry is also being developed.
Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Laboratory
Outpatient rehabilitation services are available for adults with cognitive, emotional or behavioral problems resulting from traumatic brain injury, stroke, dementia or other diseases affecting the brain. Treatment is individually tailored to the needs of each patient, and services often are coordinated with other hospital and community rehabilitation programs.
Balance Disorders Clinic
The Department of Neurology in collaboration with the Department of Otolaryngology operates a Balance Disorders Clinic in which various forms of dizziness, balance, and dysequilibrium are investigated utilizing state-of-the-art assessment tools.
