University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
and the College of Medicine

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is located on the health science campus of The University of Iowa. The campus consists of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences and the colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health. This complex is an integral part of the university and has a long-standing tradition of excellence in patient care and education. It has long been recognized as one of the leading health care centers in the world.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a large teaching hospital providing tertiary level services for the state and region, while at the same time creating an environment for health education programs at all levels and in all specialties.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is organized through 18 departments: anesthesiology, hospital dentistry, dermatology, family practice, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, surgery, neurosurgery, radiation oncology, and urology. Each clinical service offers residency programs and fellowship programs as applicable, which are directed by faculty members from the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry.

Beyond the bricks and mortar, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has a substantial investment in advanced medical technology. Recent additions to the array of state-of-the-art medical technology include PET scanning, laser angioplasty, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, cine CT scanning, lithotripsy, and in vitro fertilization. A sophisticated computer information system allows rapid retrieval of patient-related data.

Residents who train at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics experience a commitment to clinical excellence, including quality care delivered in a wide range of services, the most up-to-date medical technology, a medical staff comprised of senior physicians who have national reputations in their fields, excellent nursing and other professional staffs with rigorous requirements for quality, and highly respected clinical and basic science research programs.

The College of Medicine
The University of Iowa College of Medicine contributes significantly to the strength of the University of Iowa Health Care. With a full-time faculty of more than 600 members, the college carries out its functions of education, research and service. Talented faculty bring fresh ideas, new techniques, and enthusiasm to the teaching of medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students in various training programs.

At a time when competition for private and public funding of medical education and research has intensified, funding agencies continue to recognize and reward the exemplary research conducted in Iowa. The College of Medicine holds a superior ranking among schools of medicine in public universities in the amount of funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The College of Medicine's teaching facilities are located adjacent to the UI Hospitals and Clinics allowing scientists from both basic science and clinical departments to easily pursue interdisciplinary research and education in such areas as human molecular genetics, immunology, molecular and cell biology, and neuroscience.

The faculty, students, resources, and funding at The University of Iowa College of Medicine form the cornerstone of a first-class institution committed to the missions of the education of students, the care of patients, and the commitment to the understanding of basic biological processes.

The University of Iowa
Founded in 1847 as Iowa's first public institution of higher learning, The University of Iowa was the first such institution in the United States to admit women and men on equal basis. The University now enrolls approximately 29,000 students in the colleges of Liberal Arts, Law, Business Administration, Medicine, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacy, as well as the Graduate College.

The University enrolls students from every Iowa county, from every state, and from approximately 75 countries. The faculty is international in composition and reputation, having earned distinction in fields ranging from speech and hearing to science and space exploration. The University was the first to accept creative work in the arts in lieu of theses and is the home of the renowned Writers' Workshop.

The campus is compact--the free Cambus system circles it every twelve minutes-- but it abounds with scenic beauty. An abundance of stately trees and manicured greenery, enhanced by the Iowa River, sets the atmosphere for what is increasingly a pedestrian campus.

The 10 colleges and seven schools which constitute The University of Iowa are enriched by the Iowa Center for the Arts, which includes the Museum of Art and educational programs in art and art history, music, dance, and theater. Hancher Auditorium showcases some of the nation's finest cultural events.

The University of Iowa Hawkeyes take the sports spotlight in the state. As a member of the Big Ten Athletic Conference, the Hawkeyes represent the University in a full range of men's and women's intercollegiate sports.

Participant sports are within five minutes walking distance of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A swimming pool and indoor track, as well as basketball and racquetball courts are located in the Field House near the hospital. A nearby recreation building provides indoor tennis courts, weight lifting equipment, and a second indoor track. The University golf course is on the edge of the medical center campus and outdoor tennis courts are located immediately adjacent to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The City of Iowa City
The eastern portion of The University of Iowa campus merges with downtown Iowa City, whose approximately 70,000 inhabitants enjoy the advantages of a comfortable small-town atmosphere in combination with the University's cosmopolitan diversity and cultural and recreational opportunities.

A great many 19th century homes grace the residential areas of Iowa City, and entire neighborhoods have joined efforts to preserve and improve them. Iowa City has over 500 acres of parks with swimming pools, nature trails, and picnic facilities. The Coralville Reservoir, Lake Macbride, and Kent Park are major recreational areas near the city.

Education is Iowa City's heritage. Iowa City's population has the highest percentage (38.6 percent) of college-educated adults of any city in the United States. Transportation is remarkably good. The University Cambus system is matched by municipal buses serving Iowa City and adjoining Coralville. A 15-minute drive on Interstate Highway 380 to the Cedar Rapids Airport provides access to Northwest, TWA, United and several other airlines. Via Interstate 80, which passes on the north edge of the city, Iowa City is only four hours from downtown Chicago and less than a day's drive from Minneapolis, Omaha, Kansas City and St. Louis.
