UI Carver College of Medicine

Research Profile: Hiroto Kawasaki, MD

He joined the University of Iowa Human Brain Physiology group as a post-doctoral fellow in 1999.

One avenue of his research here at the university concerns mechanisms in the human brain involved in very high level operations including hearing, speech, language, and the display of emotions.

This unique work involves recording of electrical activity directly from the cerebral cortex and deep limbic structures over a period of weeks from awake and alert human patients undergoing clinical evaluation for intractable epilepsy. This ongoing research has rapidly yielded a wealth of new information some of which has been published in Nature Neuroscience.
