Policy and Procedure on Fellow Associate Duty Hours

This policy and procedure describes Fellow Associate duty hours for the University of Iowa Department of Neurosurgery.

The hours of a Fellow Associate will not exceed 40-50 hours per week; hours are monitored and tracked as they are for program residents.  The Fellow Associate has no call obligations during this period.

Fellow Associates are PGY7s, and function as Junior Faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery, as their academic year is comprised of two six month blocks:

  1. As a Junior Faculty spending time in the clinic and OR setting, supervised by the Department Head, and

  2. Research time, supervised by the Department Head.

He has no night call obligations during the week, except under circumstances when a Chief Resident is unavailable to take call.  The Fellow Associate takes Chief Resident call 1 weekend in 3.
