Policy and Procedure on Spine Fellow Supervision

All spine fellows in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics are supervised by faculty. Individual faculty supervise the spine fellow for four-month rotations. During these rotations, the spine fellow participates in all spinal surgery performed by that faculty member, as well as their clinic. There are no fellow-directed unsupervised clinics.

Spine fellows may also perform inpatient consultations. All inpatient consultations during regular working hours are staffed by faculty members.  Call requirements for the spine fellow are minimal; however, weekend and on-call consultations are staffed within 24 hours by the faculty on call.  The program director meets with the fellow on a monthly basis, which provides an opportunity to address fellowship progress and any problems with supervision.
