UI Obstetrics and Gynecology provides consultation, treatment planning, and inpatient and outpatient care for a comprehensive range of general and specialty obstetrics and gynecology services for all stages of a woman’s life.

Nearly 30 physicians comprise the UI Obstetrics and Gynecology faculty, representing multiple specialties. In addition, our care team includes certified nurse midwives, advanced registered nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and ultrasound technicians. Six of our physicians were named among the “Best Doctors” in America in an independent listing. Our faculty physicians and nurse midwives delivered about 1,800 babies and saw more than 59,000 outpatient visits this year. The Labor-Delivery Suite and Maternal-Fetal Intensive Care Unit offered by UI Maternity Care is a state-of-the-art facility providing total care for the mother and her newborn.

In keeping with our tertiary role, regionally we are recognized for our advanced specialty care, particularly high-risk obstetrics, prenatal diagnostics, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Additional specialty areas include:

  • Colposcopy
  • Fibroids
  • Genetics counseling
  • Gynecologic urology
  • Menopause
  • Pelvic pain
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Vulvar vaginal diseases

Gynecologic oncology is also part of the department, with clinical services based in the Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center, part of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In 2007, U.S.News and World Report ranked our gynecology services among the best in the nation (32nd) out of 5,462 hospitals. Our patient care commitment emphasizes compassion, convenience, and comfort, as well as the most advanced technical expertise in an academic medical center. Complementing this is a strong dedication to education of students, residents, fellows, and practicing physicians, and both basic and clinical research.
