Laser Vision Correction

The Laser Vision Correction Experience

Prior to the procedure eye drops are instilled to numb the surface of the eye. A reclining chair allows the surgical eye to be aligned with the laser light. The other eye will be covered during the procedure for comfort and protection. The eyelid is held open by a lid speculum to keep the eye from blinking. A fixation light helps to keep the eye in alignment while the laser computer is programming the exact specifications for vision treatment.

The first step in the LASIK procedure is to make a flap or in the PRK procedure to remove the epithelium, or outer layer of cells of the cornea. The physician will have you continue to look at the fixation light even though it may appear to go slightly in and out of focus.

The alignment of the laser light on the cornea and the fixation will be rechecked before the procedure begins. Depending on the amount of treatment needed, the laser process will take 15-60 seconds. The physician has full control of the laser at all times and may stop at any point if necessary.

After treatment, eye drops will be instilled to reduce the risk of infection and to decrease discomfort. A soft, clear "bandage" contact lens may be placed on the eye to aid healing and comfort. Eye drops with instructions for their use will be given.
