Ignacio V. Ponseti Biochemistry and Cell Biology Laboratory
The Ignacio
V. Ponseti Biochemistry and Cell Biology Laboratory, located at 1182
Medical Laboratories Building, serves as a resource for the conduct of basic
and applied biological research directed toward investigating the normal
structure and function of the musculoskeletal system. Other areas
of investigation include normal skeletal growth and development, tissue
regeneration, tissue aging and cell-matrix interactions. The laboratory
serves orthopaedic faculty members, fellows, residents, and medical students.
Financial support comes from external sources, (federal agencies, foundations,
and not-for-profit organizations), as well as from internal funds.
Current areas of investigation include the molecular biology of intervertebral
disc development, aging of articular cartilage, osteoarthritis, spondylo-epiphyseal
dysplasias, chondrocyte-matrix interactions, response of chondrocytes to
cartilage matrix proteins and age-related changes in chondrocyte function.
