Medical Education Program- Senior Elective

076:203 SUB-INTERNSHIP IN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

Objectives:

The student will:

  1. increase his/her clinical skills by assuming an intern's level of responsibility for management of a limited number of orthopaedic patients.
  2. increase their proficiency in perioperative patient assessment and management, including assisting in procedures and use of laboratory diagnosis and radiologic studies pertinent to one faculty member's clinical practice.
  3. 80% of their time must be spent in assessing and managing patients, no more than 20% in the operating room.

The student will accomplish this by:

  1. working on an orthopaedic surgery service as a sub-intern including their night/weekend call, clinics, procedures, and postprocedure patient management.
  2. Sub-interns may work on the Adult Reconstruction service, VA service and the Trauma service.
  3. The student will have similar responsibilities to an R1 for their limited panel of patients including
    1. the daily assessments and documentation associated with inpatient care
    2. participation in procedures,
    3. post-procedure documentation,
    4. writing orders, albeit under close supervision by the team's upper level resident

To assure adequate clinical experience, no more than one sub-intern or other senior student may be on the same team simultaneously. At least one month prior to the clerkship, students must e-mail Dr. Clark/Linda Croy two or more proposed goals for their sub-internship month, which may need to be negotiated if not clearly feasible. At the end of the clerkship, students will meet with Dr. Clark addressing how their goals were or were not met.

All sub-interns will be scheduled to meet during or after their month with the Department Head - Dr. Buckwalter, the Residency Program Director - Dr. Marsh, or Dr. Clark. Linda Croy will facilitate the student's meetings

The student will attend all departmental didactic lectures and conferences. In additional the student will take night call with the assigned team at least one night per week.
