Clinical Orthopaedics
(076:002)Student Handbook and Outline

Grading

The grade for the Orthopaedic Clerkship is determined based on the student’s evaluation by the residents and/or faculties of the team and the results of a written examination. This basic policy has been in place since 1981.

Clinical Performance

Clinical performance will be rated on both OR, inpatient and outpatient services. Students are expected to participate in all assigned team activities, including inpatient and outpatient clinical activities, conferences, chief resident sessions, morning report and grand rounds.

Examination

Students will not be allowed to take the exam untill all on-line evaluations have been completed by 2:30p.m. on the day of he exam.

At the completion of the clerkship a student must pass an examination that covers the material outlined in the educational objectives and lectures. The examination will be administered on the last Friday of the clerkship, beginning at 3:00 pm and will last 1 1/2 hours. Students are not allowed to bring notes or other references into the examination room. Clinical responsibilities for the students will end at 6:00 pm Thursday afternoon before the examination with the option of attending the conferences or inpatient rounds the next day. Students will not be excused from clinical responsibilities to study for the examination.

To receive a passing grade, the student must achieve a score of >70% on the written examination and have an overall satisfactory clinical performance evaluation(s). One additional opportunity to achieve a passing score will be afforded to any student whose first examination score is < 70%. The repeat examination must be taken before the end of the semester in which the clerkship occurs. Both the original score and the repeat score will be reported to the Dean's Office. A student who must repeat the examination is not eligible for "Honors." A failure grade on the repeat examination will result in a grade of "Fail" for the course, and the student will be required to repeat the clerkship.

To receive a grade of Honors, the student must achieve a high grade on the written examination (usually greater than or equal to 90) and at least one outstanding mark (5.0) on the on-line evaluation.

A near Honors (H-) grade is usually given with a score of 86 to 90 and with a good/ outstanding evaluation. (4.5 or greater)

A Failure grade is a score usually less than or equal to 70 and a low evaluation.

A Marginal Pass is given with a low grade usually less than or equal to 70 with a good evaluation.

By 5-7 days after your rotation, Linda Croy, your Orthopaedic contact person, will notify you by email that you may check on "ICON" for both your test score and your final grade.
