Protect Yourself

Find out about the procedures that will be occurring in your assigned OR before you enter the room. Patients may have communicable diseases; there may be extensive radiation from x-ray, fluoroscopy and/or radioactive implants. If there is any chance that you are pregnant, please notify me on the first day. Also, you should know where to find gloves and other protective equipment. Learn how to use needles safely.

The College of Medicine policy on exposure to blood-borne pathogens:

• In the event of a potential exposure to a blood-borne pathogen, you are immediately to wash/irrigate the area thoroughly, identify the source (patient) of the exposure, and notify the supervising faculty, resident, or other responsible person. That person should assist you in taking the necessary steps promptly, including contacting the Student Health Service. If SHS is closed, contact the UIHC Emergency Treatment Center (Roy Carver Pavilion). The telephone numbers are listed on the pocket card, which you should keep with you at all times. The SHS or ETC will instruct you about what to do next, and you will be released to report immediately for medical care as instructed.
