Acoustic Impedance Measurements
Measurements that help guide the audiologist in
identifying abnormalities of the auditory system. Two
basic measures are conducted, including tympanometry: a
measurement of middle ear pressure determined by the
mobility of the eardrum and Acoustic reflex testing which
looks at the contraction of the middle-ear muscles in
response to intense sounds.
Assistive Listening Devices (ALD)
Class of hearing instruments designed to improve
listening in a noisy environment. These include FM
systems, personal amplifiers, telephone amplifiers, and
television listeners.
Audiology
Branch of healthcare devoted to study,
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of hearing disorders.
Audiologist
Healthcare professional who provides
comprehensive services related to evaluation and
rehabilitation of hearing impairment and its associated
communication disorder.
Auditory Brainstem Response Testing (ABR, BAER)
An auditory evoked measure used to predict
hearing sensitivity and to asses the integrity of the 8th
cranial nerve and auditory brainstem structures.
Balance/Dizziness Evaluations
Tests of balance and coordination and the
examination of organs and systems that influence balance
and coordination.
Cochlear Implant
A device that enables persons with profound
hearing loss to perceive sound. The device consists of an
electrode array that is surgically implanted into the
cochlea and an external amplifier which activates the
electrode.
Electroacoustic Analysis of Hearing Aids
Electronic measurement of various parameters of
the acoustic output of a hearing aid.
Hearing Aids
An electronic device designed to amplify and
deliver sound to the ear, consisting of a microphone,
amplifier, and receiver.
Infant Hearing Screening
Electrophysiological techniques used to screen
the hearing of newborns, including OAE and ABR screening
tests.
Intra-operative Monitoring
Continuous assessment of the cranial nerves
during surgery; e.g. during acoustic tumor removal, the
8th cranial nerve is monitored.
Otoacoustic Emissions Testing (OAE)
A low-level sound emitted by the cochlea as an
echo either spontaneously or as an echo related to the
function of the outer hair cells.
Tinnitus
Sensation of ringing or other sound in the head
without an external cause.
