Swallowing

What Is a Swallowing Disorder?
If you have difficulty swallowing, you may have a swallowing disorder (dysphagia).  Swallowing disorders can cause serious health problems including weight loss, malnutrition, dehydration, and pneumonia. If you think you may have a swallowing disorder, you should see a doctor.

Healthcare professionals who specialize in helping people with swallowing disorders are available at UI Hospitals and Clinics Speech and Swallowing Service. These professionals will meet with you and complete a careful evaluation of your concerns about swallowing.

Special swallowing tests are performed to learn exactly what the problem may be. Treatment recommendations are made and our specialists help you get started on an appropriate treatment plan. Sometimes, swallowing therapy can help minimize or eliminate the health risks associated with many swallowing disorders. If so, we help you develop an effective therapy plan that may be offered near your home or in our clinic.
