General Recommendations

  • Have a medical examination and be certain that there is no medical treatment for your tinnitus.

  • Use hearing protection whenever you are in the presence of intense noise.

  • If you are having difficulty communicating, you should use a hearing aid or hearing aids.

  • If you are annoyed by loud sounds, this may be related to your tinnitus and you should consider desensitization therapy.

  • See if the presence of low-level background sound can reduce the annoying aspects of tinnitus.

  • Try to refocus your attention away from your tinnitus and on something that you enjoy and that occupies your mind.

  • If this is not sufficient, consider counseling, sound therapy, hearing aids, psychological therapies or medications.  Contact an audiologist, otologist or psychologist who has experience with tinnitus patients.
