General Recommendations
- Have a medical examination and be certain that there is no medical treatment for your tinnitus.
- Use hearing protection whenever you are in the presence of intense noise.
- If you are having difficulty communicating, you should use a hearing aid or hearing aids.
- If you are annoyed by loud sounds, this may be related to your tinnitus and you should consider desensitization therapy.
- See if the presence of low-level background sound can reduce the annoying aspects of tinnitus.
- Try to refocus your attention away from your tinnitus and on something that you enjoy and that occupies your mind.
- If this is not sufficient, consider counseling, sound therapy, hearing aids, psychological therapies or medications. Contact an audiologist, otologist or psychologist who has experience with tinnitus patients.
