Number and Duration of Positions
One position is available each year. The training program lasts two
years.
Accreditation
The Pediatric Otolaryngology Program was ACGME accredited in 1998.
Training
and Objectives
To train the fellow to become a competent subspecialist in the management
of head and neck diseases and disorders in neonates, infants and
children. Upon completion of this two-year program, the trainee is
expected to:
- Demonstrate expertise in the diagnosis, medical, and
surgical management of congenital and acquired conditions of the
ears, nose, and throat.
- Display a sound knowledge of the embryology,
developmental anatomy,
physiology, microbiology, oncology, and psychology of the
infant and child with a disease related to the head and/or neck.
- Appreciate
the complexity of interacting with families and caregivers of pediatric
patients.
- Exhibit an excellent understanding of the role of genetics
in causing congenital and acquired otolaryngologic disorders
in
pediatric patients.
- Develop a research project in an
area of interest pertaining to pediatric otolaryngology.
- Establish
expertise in the publication of scientific studies relating to pediatric
otolaryngology.
- Competently instruct otolaryngology and pediatric
residents, and family practitioners in pediatric
otolaryngology.
Course Structure
Clinical
Throughout the two years of training, each trainee
will spend a minimum of 18 months on the clinical
service. Trainees will have
the opportunity
to train with all Pediatric Otolaryngology faculty.
As
a
tertiary referral center and a primary care provider,
the University of
Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics provides care to pediatric patients
whose care needs will range from basic to extremely specialized,
exposing
the
Fellow to the
full spectrum of head and neck complaints. Time
is
spent with the facial plastic and reconstructive
surgery Cleft
lip and palate
repair team.
Research
Each trainee will have six months protected time
without clinical obligations to conduct academic
research.
Trainees are encouraged
to identify a
faculty mentor within the first year.
Conferences
A variety of conferences are offered within
the division. These conferences cover topics
from
basic science
to case-oriented, practical approaches
in patient care. Trainees are expected to
attend Grand Rounds (weekly), Airway Rounds (monthly)
and other
conferences as
appropriate.
Fellows
will actively participate by presenting articles,
themes, cases, or results of their own research.

Moonlighting is not permitted.
