Residency Programs Rotations


Residency Rotations by Post-Graduate Year

Resident Year 1
University of Iowa General Surgery
Two month rotation Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery
One month rotations include: Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Anesthesia, SICU, Trauma, General Surgery, Vascular, Emergency Treatment Center
Call: Determined by individual services.
Surgical experience: Assist with major head and neck cases and primary surgeon on minor cases.

Resident Year 2
University of Iowa Deptartment of Otolaryngology Junior Resident - 12 months:

  • Head and Neck Service – 10 weeks
  • Pediatric Service – 10 weeks
  • Otology Service – 20 weeks
  • Basic Science Course – 6 weeks

Call: 1:7 in-house shared with R3 including during the Basic Science course.
Surgical experience: Primary surgeon on myringotomy and tubes, tonsillectomies, minor head and neck cases. Assist on major head and neck, otology and pediatric cases.

* Residents in the clinical-research combined program do two years of research between R1 and R12 Otolaryngology.

Resident Year 3
University of Iowa Dept of Otolaryngology Junior Resident – 30 weeks:

  • Head and Neck Service – 10 weeks
  • Otology Service- 10 weeks
  • Research – 10 weeks
    VA Medical Center in Iowa City Junior Resident– 10 weeks.

Mason City Clinic ENT in Mason City, Iowa Junior Resident – 10 weeks.
Call: 1:7 in-house while on University rotations shared with R2.
Home call when at the VA or in Mason City.
Surgical experience: Primary surgeon on myringotomy and tubes, tonsillectomies, minor head and neck cases and occasionally on major head and neck or otology cases.

Resident Year 4
University of Iowa Dept of Otolaryngology Senior Resident – 40 weeks:

  • Head and Neck Service – 10 weeks
  • Pediatric Service – 20 weeks
  • Research – 10 weeks

Des Moines Area Medical Education Consortium Des Moines, Iowa Senior Resident – 10 weeks:

  • Des Moines VA
  • Broadlawns
  • Carrithers & Koch Plastic Surgery

Call: ~1:6 at home while on University rotations shared with R 5
Home call while in Des Moines.
Surgical experience: Primary surgeon on major head and neck, plastics and pediatric cases.

Resident Year 5
University of Iowa- 40 weeks:

  • Head and Neck Chief- 10 weeks
  • Neurotology/General Chief- 20 weeks
  • Pediatric ENT/General Chief- 10 weeks

VA Medical Center in Iowa City- 10 weeks
Call: ~1:8 at home while on University rotations shared with R-4’s
Backup call at the VA hospital
Surgical experience: Primary surgeon on all major cases
