Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation

Following you will find information concerning the various people associated with our program.
When a new patient is referred to our program a primary physician is assigned to care for this patient by the director. Each of our physicians has a specialty area in which he performs most of his research. The primary physician makes decisions concerning the transplant treatment and continues to follow the patient in clinic post-transplant. The attending physician cares for the inpatients on a day to day basis. The primary physician is consulted regarding any major decisions concerning an inpatient.

We use a primary care staffing system that allows the nurses to become very familiar with an individual patient in the inpatient setting. Our nursing staff is highly trained and the turnover has been minimal.

Residents and medical students are not employed on our unit due to the complexities of caring for BMT patients. We feel that it takes extensive training to develop these skills. We employ three Physician Assistants who assist the attending physician. Each new patient is assigned a primary PA who will follow their care from the pre-transplant workup through long-term follow-up visits. All three of our PAs have been with this program for over 9 years.

The children on our unit are also supported by a school teacher, child life specialist, social worker, neuropsychologist, dietician, and numerous volunteers.

Our coordinator is charged with obtaining insurance approval for treatment, assisting families in obtaining additional funds as needed, coordination and scheduling of clinic visits, arranging for all pre-transplant testing, distribution of information requested by potential patients and referring physicians. This enables us to provide a centralized office for communications with our families, insurance companies, and referring physicians.
