Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation

Welcome to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation (PBMT) web site. We hope that these pages will provide you with an overview of our program specifically of BMT in general.

Please select if you would like to learn more about bone marrow transplantation in general. This is a very good place to start if you are not already familiar with this field.

The Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital opened in May 1986.  Dr. Frederick Goldman has been a member of this program since 1992 and the acting director of the program since 1997.  Dr. M. Sue O'Dorisio is our brain tumor expert. Doctors Thomas Loew, Raymond Tannous, and Jorge Di Paola are the other physicians who work with this program.

Patients with the following diseases may be eligible for transplantation within the PBMT program. Select each disease to find out more about that particular disease.

Thank you to all the authors of the above sites for providing such valuable information to our patients and their families.

Please select this to see more about the how we treat the above diseases in our program. We are continually striving to develop new protocols.

At this time we perform approximately 20 marrow transplants per year and have performed a total of over 375 transplants.  We performed autologous and allogeneic marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplants and have experience using not only matched related donors but also matched and partially matched unrelated and mismatched related donors.  In fact, we have transplanted over 150 patients with mismatched donors, representing one of the largest centers world wide specializing in this type of transplant.

This program is an accredited transplant center associated with the national Marrow Donor Program.  As such, we are able to search their registry of over 3 million volunteer unrelated marrow donors.  The National marrow Donor Program has recently added an umbilical cord database to their search system so in addition to marrow donors we have access to the cryopreserved cord blood units in over 15 cord blood banks.

Since 1997 this program has been a member of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium.  We are participating in several new trials through this group.  We currently have approved clinical research trials available to treat ALL, brain tumors, and recurrent or high-risk solid tumors.  We also have a trial open with used unrelated umbilical cord blood as the source of stem cells for treatment of a wide variety of diseases and conditions.
