Endocrinology
Patients with endocrinologic disorders are initially seen in the Endocrine clinic on a consultative basis. Many of these children then receive long-term follow-up by an endocrinologist. The services provided in the Endocrine clinic for children with possible hormonal disorders include special testing and data interpretation, as well as a variety of treatment options.
The types of patients seen in this clinic include children with concerns about growth and puberty, thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, bone, and various other conditions.
Diabetes
The diabetes clinic cares for over 650 children with diabetes in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. Our clinic is held at The University of Iowa Children's Hospital. To help facilitate access to specialty care in outlying communities, we also offer Outreach Clinics in Davenport, Waterloo, Ottumwa, and Burlington. As part of our on site services we offer one-on-one education classes for newly diagnosed families in an inpatient and outpatient setting, diabetes refresher classes, and group pre-pump classes and insulin pump therapy. Hemoglobin A1C results are available in 6 minutes which allows discussion at appointments.

Weight Management
Our weight management services for children and adolescents focuses on healthy lifestyles to achieve weight loss through a comprehensive program that includes consultation with dietary, physical education, and behavioral modification services as well as an assessment of hormonal disorders that could be contributing to excessive weight gain. We utilize new and innovative technologies including the BODPOD to accurately assess body composition and devices to analyze metabolism.
Our approach coordinates the services of a physician, dietician, physical therapist and psychologist to improve eating habits, body image, activity patterns, and family dynamics. Patients may also be eligible to enroll in a 12 week family nutrition session to provide further reinforcement for the development of healthy lifestyle choices.

Developmental Endocrinology
This clinic is designed to serve patients who have special medical conditions requiring the coordinated services of physicians in several specialties. These specialties are most often Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Urology, Genetics, and Psychology. In the Developmental Endocrinology clinic, all of these providers are available to see the child on the same day. The specific conditions that are followed in this clinic include those that can cause abnormalities of genital development or so-called "disorders of sex development" (DSD). The clinic is held twice annually.
