Mission

The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine is dedicated to the improvement of the health of infants, children, and adolescents in Iowa and surrounding states through patient care, education of health professionals, advocacy, community service, and research.

Vision

The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine will

  • Maintain and enhance its status as a core member of the Department of Pediatrics
  • Provide patient care in an academic General Pediatric setting
  • Educate pediatric healthcare professionals
  • Advocate for child health locally, regionally, and nationally
  • Serve our local community
  • Engage in research and dissemination of new knowledge
  • Foster the personal and professional growth of its members

Core Values

Individually and as a group, members of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine embrace the following core values:

  • General Pediatricians have unique skills that promote the overall health of infants, children, and adolescents and that complement the skills of Pediatric subspecialists
  • Clinical care of patients in the General Pediatrics service is critical to the overall mission of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital
  • Clinical care must be patient and family-centered, evidence-based, efficient, accessible, and responsive to the ever changing diversity of our patient population
  • Advocacy and community service must be an inherent component of each physician's daily work
  • Scholarship related to clinical service, education, advocacy, or research must be pursued by individual faculty members in order to promote personal and Divisional development as well as to enhance the health and well-being of children and families
  • Research must be developed by individuals and the Division as a whole to promote child health, education, and advocacy.

Clinical Services

  • Child Health Clinic or "Well Child Care" — health maintenance and supervision including immunizations, health promotion and patient education
  • Acute Illness or Sick Visits — for acutely ill infants, children, teenagers and young adults
  • Adolescent Counseling — psychological counseling for a wide range of adolescent concerns
  • Adolescent Medicine — concerns relating to teenagers and young adults
  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disoders— attention related concerns
  • Behavioral and Developmental Disorders — behavioral and developmental concerns including assessment
  • Breastfeeding Support and Consultation — education, treatment and support for breastfeeding women and their families
  • Child Abuse — services for suspected victims of child abuse and neglect
  • Chronic Illness — for problems of long duration or frequent recurrence
  • Diagnostic Evaluations or "Second Opinions" — comprehensive evaluations of a broad range of pediatric concerns
  • Encopresis — concerns with constipation, stool incontinence, and toilet training including anorectal function testing
  • Feeding and Growth Disorders, "Failure to Thrive," "Lack of Normal Physiological Growth"— concerns with appropriate weight gain in children four years or under and feeding problems
  • Lead Consultation Service — concerns with lead poisoning
  • Speech and Hearing Services — concerns relating to speech and language development and hearing screening
  • Travel Clinic — for children, adolescents and young adults travelling internationally including immunizations and health education
