Camp Sunshiny Day provides a wonderful summer camp experience for children and adolescents, ages 6-17, inclusive, with sickle cell anemia and related diseases. Because of their disease, these children require special attention to hydration, medical evaluation and other special needs. A full medical staff, including a physician who specializes in these diseases, attend camp.
Camp Sunshiny Day is held at the Howard H. Cherry Boy Scout Reservation in Wakonda, IA. The Howard H. Cherry Boy Scout Reservation provides an appropriate environment for these children and adolescents. Their Alsop Center is temperature controlled. Their full camp staff provide a safe and enjoyable experience in a wide variety of activities including swimming, arts and crafts, archery, air rifle, fishing, and boating. In addition, Howard H. Cherry Scout Reservation's Challenge Course and Climbing Tower both provide unique challenges for these children and adolescents.
Day trips are planned activities of the camp schedule every year. Campers and staff have attended the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, the Herbert H. Hoover National Historic Site and Presidential Library in West Branch, and the IMAX Theatre/Children's Science Museum and African-American History Museum in Cedar Rapids. Also, campers and staff annually attend a Cedar Rapids Kernels baseball game.
All children and adolescents served by the Iowa Comprehensive Care Centers between the ages of 6 and 17, inclusive, with sickle cell disease or a related disorder (e.g. thalassemia, hemoglobin C disease, etc.) are welcome to attend. There is no charge to the camper or their family. Camp Sunshiny Day is supported by donations made through the University of Iowa Foundation.
