Medical students are a major focus of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics.
We provide educational opportunities for medical students in all four years and also participate in the Medical Scientist Training Program. All of the pediatric educational activities are rated highly by students. The main educational emphasis lies in clinical courses for third and fourth year medical students, but first and second year students also have regular contact with pediatric faculty in lectures, small groups, and a hands-on session in which they examine toddlers.
Clinical courses in the third and fourth years provide opportunities to learn about health and illness in infants, children, and adolescents from both the generalist and the specialty perspective. In the third year clerkship, students develop knowledge and skills in outpatient clinics, inpatient services, community-based pediatric offices, and advocacy activities. This introduction to pediatrics includes direct patient care, case-based learning, computerized resources, and teaching by experienced faculty, fellow, and resident physicians. Simulated patient exercises are used for both teaching and evaluation. Students also learn from families and children during clinical interactions and an outreach activity at an elementary school. Fourth year students demonstrate their increased independence and skills in challenging electives and sub-internships that offer learning opportunities designed to prepare students for residency.
