The Department of Pediatrics has been accredited for more than 75 years for either practicing as a general pediatrician or going on to fellowship training.
The educational curriculum is focused on a combination of didactic lectures, teaching sessions and conferences, in a challenging and stimulating environment with a total of at least eight hours a week devoted to such sessions. There are several curricular offerings including the Pediatric Personal and Professional Development series, annual retreats, residents as teachers curriculum and continuous quality improvement projects. The faculty at University of Iowa Children's Hospital has a deep, long-standing commitment to resident education that is unmatched.
Pediatric residents are an integral part of the family-centered care provided at the UI Children's Hospital. Being a primary to tertiary care center, our draw area is extremely large leading to a broad diversity with respect to patient pathology or patient ethnicity. The continuity clinic experience is truly just that-a continuity clinic with an extraordinarily low no-show rate. Our graduates go on to general pediatrics practices in all regions of the country. Over the last 10 years, 33 percent of our graduates have joined prestigious fellowships around the country including our own.
We hope that this brief introduction to our residency program has stimulated your interest. We hope that you are able to visit us to interact with our residents and faculty, and see for yourself the tremendous learning opportunities, fantastic new clinical facilities, the quality of life and the professional and personal balance that can be achieved living in Iowa City and being a resident at University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
