Research Opportunities
Fast Facts
- Our 96 member Pediatrics Department
faculty ranks within the top 10 in total NIH funding dollars among
publicly supported medical schools.
- The UI Carver
College of Medicine and the College
of Public Healthrank11th in NIH external funding
among public universities, with $149 million in 2003
- 3 of our 5 Pediatric Critical Care faculty members are on the tenure track and have basic science research labs. Research areas of interest within our division include the function of chloride ion channels in vascular smooth muscle, the role of neutrophil-endothelial cell interactions in pneumococcal pneumonia, and conditioning of the pulmonary inflammatory response by early exposure to endotoxin.
- Another faculty member has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research and is setting up a translational research program in our unit
Providing outstanding research training is a major objective of our program. Our department is among the top departments of pediatrics in the U.S. in terms of NIH research funding, and our College of Medicine has strong basic science departments.
We have excellent opportunities for research training and experience within the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, but we also encourage our fellows to explore training opportunities in research laboratories elsewhere in the Department of Pediatrics or within the Colleges of Medicine and Public Health. Our current fellows each receive research training/mentoring from a combination of two or more faculty members with expertise/interest in diverse but overlapping areas.
