The Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) is an integral part of the University of Iowa's Children Hospital. Fellows in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics receive the majority of their clinical training at the CDD, which is a free-standing, three story facility devoted exclusively to services for individuals with disabilities or other chronic health problems and their families. This facility houses the outpatient developmental clinic, a certified pediatric sleep disorder unit, a pediatric dentistry post-graduate training program, and a state of the art pediatric audiology center. The CDD has a staff of approximately 180 professional, clerical, and support staff devoted to the care of children with disabilities.
The outpatient clinic of the Center for Disabilities and Development provides diagnostic and therapeutic interventions annually to more than 4000 infants, children and young adults with a wide range of developmental and behavioral problems. Specialty clinics provide services to children with autistic spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, encopresis, and aggressive behaviors. The scheduling staff coordinates follow-up visits so that developmental-behavioral fellows gain longitudinal experience during their three-year fellowship caring for patients of specific interest to each fellow.
