Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Nutrition Fellowship Program:
Department of Pediatrics
Fellowship Overview
The first 6 months of the fellowship are dedicated to the clinical service. During this time, first year fellows spend their time providing inpatient/outpatient consultations on the medical and surgical services, admitting and managing GI inpatients, and seeing outpatients in the GI clinic. They obtain extensive in-depth clinical experience in diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopic procedures. Fellows spend the second half of their first year pursuing their research goals under the supervision of their mentors. We believe that an early introduction to research is very important for the fellows to develop the necessary skills and mentorship they need to transition into independent investigators. During the second half of the first year of fellowship, fellows work with their primary research mentor in preparing an application for external funding of their training.
Second year and first half of the third year of the fellowship are dedicated entirely to research. Fellows continue to be exposed to the clinical service by seeing outpatients and doing procedures once a week. This schedule gives our fellows an uninterrupted research experience of 2 years, which is necessary to develop hypotheses, generate data and learn techniques that will serve them well in the future. Third year fellows return to the clinical service during the last 6 months of their fellowship.
